Talk description:

This paper offers a close reading of contemporary artist Young Joon Kwak's sculptural series, Spartan Ruin. By juxtaposing Kwak's sculptural "skins" with ancient visual and verbal discourses on figuration and the athletic body, I propose that the work invites us to reorient our senses away from the forms of classicism that we've been trained to see and instead towards the layered kinesthetic histories of sporting bodies that Kwak's work invites us to feel.
