Donna Zuckerberg (The Paideia Institute) "The Clothes Make the Man: Euripides, Aristophanes, and the Evolution of the Ragged Hero"

The textual relationship between Euripides and Aristophanes is usually imagined as existing through a one-way mirror: Euripides looks at the mirror and self-consciously reacts to his own reflection, while Aristophanes watches him and comments on his style without Euripides’ awareness. Through exploration of the use ragged costumes in Aristophanes’ Acharnians and Euripides’ Telephus and Helen, this paper argues instead that Aristophanes and Euripides engaged in a unique dialogue across dramatic genres and drew inspiration from each other’s interpretations of similar themes.
Donna Zuckerberg received her Ph.D. in Classics from Princeton University, where she taught classes on Greek literature, Homer’s *Iliad*, and classical mythology. Since then she has served as Director of Communications and instructor at the Paideia Institute, a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to promoting the study and appreciation of the classical humanities.
