Elizabeth Asmis (U Chicago), "Philodemus on the Enjoyment of Poetry"

Philodemus (first century B.C.E.), an Epicurean philosopher and a poet, gave a new answer to the old question: how can poetry be reconciled with philosophy? This talk will explore the ways in which he thought an Epicurean can enjoy poetry.

Elizabeth Asmis is Professor of Classics and in the College at the University of Chicago. She has worked on Epicurean philosophy and Hellenistic philosophy in general, as well as on ancient aesthetics. She has given special attention to Philodemus' criticism of the highly inventive theories of poetry that evolved in the Hellenistic period.
