Felix Budelmann (Oxford): Visualizing the present in Greek Lyric

Like later forms of lyric, Greek lyric likes to create present-tense vignettes: “Eros strikes me with his purple ball”; “The great house gleams with bronze”; “I drink reclining on board ship”. This talk explores the interaction of temporality and visualisation in these characteristically lyric moments.

Felix Budelmann teaches Greek literature at the University of Oxford. He specialises in Greek drama and lyric, and has just completed a “green-and-yellow” anthology of Greek lyric.
