The Forgotten Origins of the Modern Humanities: An evening with historian James Turner

Historian James Turner will discuss how the study of languages and texts led to the formation of the humanities in the modern university. Turner's talk will center on his new book, Philology: The Forgotten Origins of the Modern Humanities.
Following the talk there will be remarks by Professor of Comparative Literature, Hans Gumbrecht.
An audience discussion and Q&A will follow.
About the Author
James Turner is the Cavanaugh Professor of Humanities at the University of Notre Dame, where he taught in the History Department and the doctoral program in history and philosophy of science. He is the author of The Liberal Education of Charles Eliot Norton and Religion Enters the Academy, and co-author of The Sacred and the Secular University.
