Scholars of monumentality often warn us away from connotations of bigness. The link is one of convention rather than etymology, and may therefore be misleading, we are told. Yet that link is a strong one that deserves our attention in its own right. This talk will examine the commemorative impulse in ancient Rome and beyond, in hopes of better understanding the importance of size (bigness) in relation to Roman society but also more generally in relation to collective memory and materiality.
