Kevin Fisher, "Steps Toward a Digital Archaeology: New Approaches to Ancient Built Environments"

Please join us this Friday, February 25th 12pm-1pm for a talk with Dr. Kevin Fisher (The University of British Columbia). This talk will be fully virtual, and the first 20 registrants will be eligible to receive a DoorDash gift card for lunch! Dr. Fisher’s talk is titled "Steps Toward a Digital Archaeology: New Approaches to Ancient Built Environments.” Dr. Fisher writes:I’ll discuss some of the new digital/geospatial methods for detecting, recording and visualizing past built environments at various scales from specific excavation contexts, to individual buildings and entire urban landscapes. Through my research in Cyprus with the Kalavasos and Maroni Built Environments (KAMBE) Project as well as other digital initiatives, I illustrate the use of various remote sensing technologies (archaeological geophysics, photogrammetry and terrestrial LiDAR) and methods of visualizing past built environments through 3D modeling and extended reality (i.e. virtual, augmented, and mixed reality). This talk addresses the potential and limitations of these methods to illuminate aspects of the material past.
