FAQs
Who is eligible to compete in Stanford Certamen?
During our inaugural year, we are prioritizing high school students in the western region of the US. Intermediate and Advanced teams may compete.
How many chaperones does each school need to bring?
Every team/school MUST have 1 adult chaperone for every 10 students. In the case where there are fewer than 10 students, at least 1 adult must still be present. For all chaperone requirements, please visit classics.stanford.edu.
Is there a registration fee?
There is NO tournament registration fee! However, you are responsible for lodging, transportation, Saturday breakfast, and Saturday dinner. We do ask that each school bring a buzzer system unless you do not own one.
Are Friday events mandatory?
You are NOT required to attend the Friday events in order to play in Saturday's tournament. Friday's events are just for fun and celebration of the Classics!
How many teams can compete for one school? How many people are allowed on a team?
Each school may bring up to two teams for each level (two Intermediate teams, two Advanced teams). Each team may only have 4 students playing in a round. However, a team may be composed of up to 6 students. Substitutions can only be made in between rounds.
What can teams do to prepare for the tournament?
We recommend starting with the Certamen Starter Kit, a six-week comprehensive study plan with corresponding materials made by Mr. Michael Howard, a Latin teacher at Boston Latin School. We will be modeling the level of difficulty of our questions on Yale and Duke Certamen, whose past questions can be found here and here respectively.
