Standard Annual Funding
Ph.D. students in good academic standing are guaranteed funding for five years including tuition, health insurance, and stipend or salary. Students will receive a funding letter at the start of each academic year outlining details.
The department offers supplemental funding for eligible graduate students in good academic standing. All categories of funding listed below are provided at the department's discretion and can be changed, denied or eliminated at its sole discretion; they should not be considered an entitlement. You can find detailed information in the PhD Handbook.
Deadlines for all funding applications during the academic year are noted below. An academic year is September 1 - August 31.
- August 1: Discretionary Funds
- October 1: Conference or research travel in Autumn Quarter
- November 1: Doyle Fellowship and Conference or research travel in Winter Break, Winter Quarter and Spring Break (including SCS/AIA)
- April 1: Med Summer, Conference or research travel in Spring Quarter and Summer Break, Doyle Fellowship for Autumn Quarter
Years 1 - 6 are eligible to apply for up to $1,000 per academic year. Expenses must be incurred in the academic year for which funding is requested. Funding requests should be submitted shortly after purchase.
Years 3 - 6 are eligible to apply for up to $1,000 for a single conference per academic year. Years 1 and 2 are eligible to apply if they are presenting.
Years 1 - 5 are eligible to apply. The awarded amount varies. Students are required to apply for outside funding.
Job Search Funds
Years 5 - 6 are eligible to apply for up to $1,000 for a single use per academic year. Application should be submitted shortly after travel.
Doyle Mediterranean Fellowship
Years 4 - 5 who have succesfully completed their prospectus defense and all required coursework and teaching are eligible to apply to conduct research for a minimum of 5 consecutive weeks in the Mediterranean in either Autumn, Winter or Spring Quarter. Regular stipend + $2,500 for research travel awarded.
Students in year 3 are eligible to apply for an $8,500 summer research stipend in the Mediterranean.
Within 10 days of completing travel, please submit the travel reimbursement spreadsheet and attach it to the Department of Classics Funding Request Google Form with all your receipts. This Google form is also used for travel advances, travel card, p-card and misc. reimbursements.
