Michelle Heeman

Michelle is a PhD student in classical archaeology, with research interests in ancient imperialism and liminality, heritage studies and the reception of the past, community engagement in archaeology, art fraud and antiquities trafficking, cultural property law, and the archaeology of the contemporary. Prior to coming to Stanford, Michelle worked at the U.S. Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C., where she assisted federal law enforcement in investigations concerning fraud in the American Indian and Alaska Native art and craft product market. She has participated in field projects in Jordan, Israel/Palestine, Italy, and Upstate New York. She is a member of the Marzamemi Maritime Heritage Project (MMHP) in southeastern Sicily, where she is assisting with the documentation of boats of contemporary displacement as part of the project’s work to record the ephemeral material culture of the Mediterranean's recent past.
