Paul Johnston's current research focusses on the Greek and Latin literatures of the Roman world, approaching them as products of an interconnected bilingual cultural system centered among Rome's political classes and entangled with the Roman state. He seeks to develop new ways of understanding the literary record of Rome which move beyond the monolinguistic assumptions of traditional approaches and recover the complexity of the multi-ethnic and multi-linguistic world of the ancient Mediterranean. His research interests range widely in the literature, culture and history of the ancient Mediterranean (and beyond). In addition to his work on Roman literature, he has published articles on Greek tragedy, ancient Greek onomastics, and the reception of the classics in the 20th century.
