The Future of Classics Initiative at Stanford

Project Overview

What is the future of ancient studies? Made possible by a generous gift, our initiative will feature ten events over the course of five years (2024-2028) that address this question. Half of them will be organized by members of our faculty, starting with international conferences that focus on the promise and challenges of globalizing approaches and data science. Those meetings will be complemented by another five events convened by teams of our PhD students: as representatives of the next generation of scholars they are well-positioned to identify and discuss different ways forward. We intend these gatherings to be cumulative in nature: our goal is to develop and showcase a growing body of ideas about future directions in ancient studies. Event programs and outputs are made public on this site, which will also acknowledge and connect to like-minded efforts around the world.
