To separate the act from the thing: technologies of value in the ancient Mediterranean

This dissertation examines the role of economic instruments--measures, writing, and coins--in shaping the conception and manipulation of value in the ancient Mediterranean. It investigates economic instruments as cognitive tools, showing how they generated knowledge through practice and circulation.
