Classics Ph.D. students can specialize in literature, history, archaeology, or philosophy and the history of science. Some requirements are the same across the different tracks, but some differ. Please review the Ph.D. Handbook and Bulletin for specific details.

Ph.D. Tracking Forms

These forms can help you keep track of the course requirements for your track. 

 

First Year

Requirement Track Due
Three seminar papers All tracks By end of Spring Quarter

Latin or Greek Translation Exam

Language & Literature. Archaeology (if applicable). Spring Quarter Finals Week

 

Second Year

Requirement Track Due

General Exams (take and pass at least one)

All tracks Within the first 2 weeks of Autumn Quarter
Three seminar papers All tracks By end of Spring Quarter

Fifth Year

Apply for dissertation fellowships, postdoctoral fellowships, etc.* All tracks Autumn Quarter
Defend and submit dissertation All tracks Spring Quarter

*Students who choose to take more than five years to finish and submit their dissertation are responsible for obtaining outside fellowships and sources of support.
